Why Summer is the Perfect Time for Senior Photos

You know how quickly the school years fly by, and then all of a sudden they are about to graduate high school. Capturing this milestone with senior photos is a tradition for the senior class. Choosing the right time for these photos can make a big difference in how they turn out.

Beautiful Natural Lighting for Stunning Photos

One of the biggest benefits of summer senior photos is the quality of natural light. Summer days are longer, giving us more time to schedule a session. Early mornings and late afternoons is the time for “golden hour,” when the light is gentle and flattering.

Incorporate Your Summer Passions

Is your senior a lifeguard? A baseball player? Do they spend every weekend at the lake? Summer sessions make it much easier to incorporate these hobbies into their photos. We can head to the ball field or a local dock without worrying about freezing temperatures or losing light by 4:00 PM.

Avoid the Stress of the School Year

Scheduling senior photos during the school year can be challenging. Between exams, sports, clubs, and social events, finding a free day can be tough. Summer eliminates much of this stress, giving you more control over timing and preparation.

Beat the Yearbook Deadline

Most schools require senior portrait submissions much earlier than you’d expect—often by October or November. By shooting in the summer, you aren't rushing to get your gallery back or stressing over a quick turnaround. You’ll have plenty of time to choose your favorites, design your graduation announcements, and even order custom wall art before the first bell rings in the fall.

A Quick "Summer Survival" Kit

To make the session even smoother, I always recommend seniors bring a small "touch-up kit." Even in the heat, we can keep you looking fresh!

  • Oil blotting sheets or translucent powder to nix any shine.

  • A portable fan for between shots.

  • Bug spray (especially if we’re heading into the tall grass at Brenton Arboretum!).

  • Comfortable sandals to walk between spots, then swap into your heels or boots for the actual photos.

Ready to Capture the Magic?

Senior year is a whirlwind of "lasts," but your senior portraits should feel like a celebration of what’s next. By choosing a summer session, you’re not just getting beautiful light and lush scenery—you’re giving your senior the space to relax and truly be themselves before the busy school year begins. These photos are more than just a tradition; they are a timeless window into who they are at this incredible turning point in their lives.

Don't wait until the fall rush! My summer calendar fills up quickly as families look to beat the yearbook deadlines. Let’s pick a date, find a stunning location like the Brenton Arboretum, and create some magic together.
