Senior Session Prep: What to Expect During Your Senior Photo Session

Getting ready for your senior photo session can feel exciting and maybe a bit overwhelming. After all, these photos are a fun way to show off your accomplishment, and they should represent you! Knowing what to expect can help ease a little worry about what your photos will turn out like. I want to share what usually happens during a senior session, so you can focus on having fun and capturing memories.

Before the Session

Your senior photo session starts long before you're in front of the camera. I love to chat with people before their session. This helps me understand your style, interests, and what kind of photos you want. Here’s what usually happens before the session:

  • Choosing the Location

Many seniors pick spots that might go along with a theme in their photos or just a gorgeous outdoor scenery. Des Moines offers great options like the Rose Garden or the East Village, and plenty more. I typically will ask you what type of background or if you have any inspiration pictures, then I'll suggest a few locations that would suit best.

  • Outfit Selection

You’ll want to bring a few outfit options. Think about clothes that show your personality but also look good on camera. Avoid busy patterns or logos that distract from your face. Layers and accessories can add variety to your photos.

  • Hair and Makeup

Some seniors prefer to do their own hair and makeup, while others hire a professional. The key is to feel like yourself but polished. If you’re unsure, ask your photographer for tips or recommendations. I don't wear a lot of makeup when I am being photographed, and I still will love my images.

  • What to Bring

Besides clothes, bring any props or items that represent your hobbies or achievements. This could be a sports jersey, musical instrument, or even a favorite book. I brought my camera to mine!

During the Session

When the day arrives, I will guide you through the session step by step. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Warm-Up and Comfort

The first few minutes are about getting comfortable in front of the camera. I might start with simple poses or candid shots to help you relax. But I will throw in some fun prompts

  • Posing and Direction

Don’t worry if you’ve never modeled before. I will give clear directions on how to stand, where to look, and how to use your hands. I also encourage natural expressions and movements, not every image needs to be perfect.

  • Variety of Shots

Expect a mix of close-ups, full-body shots, and different angles. I will capture you in various poses and settings to give you a diverse collection of photos in your gallery.

  • Using Natural Light

I prefer shooting during the “golden hour,” the hour before sunset, because the light is soft and flattering. This means your session might be scheduled in the late afternoon or early evening. Even if it is in harsh light I will work around it to make sure you get the best images.

After the Session

Once your session wraps up, I will start editing your photos right away. Here’s what to expect after the shoot:

  • Editing Process

I will select the best shots and adjust lighting, color, and sharpness. This usually takes a couple of weeks, depending on my schedule. I do send preview galleries so you can see what the final gallery will look like.

  • Viewing Your Photos

You’ll get to see a gallery of your images online. This is when you get to pick your favorites for prints, albums, or digital keepsakes.

  • Ordering Prints and Products

The gallery I send allows you to aslo order prints of your images! That way grandma can have the best photo of you.

  • Sharing Your Photos

These photos are perfect for graduation announcements, yearbooks, or sharing with family and friends. I would love to see when you post them! Just tag me on instagram or facebook @sarahestesphotography

Tips to Make Your Senior Session Great

Here are some practical tips to help you get the most out of your senior photo session:

  • Be Yourself

Authenticity shows in photos. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Let your personality shine through.

  • Practice Posing

Try a few poses in front of a mirror before your session. This can help you feel more confident. I do it all the time when I dress fancy!

  • Communicate with Your Photographer

If you have ideas or concerns, speak up. Your photographer wants to make sure you love your photos.

  • Bring a Friend or Family Member

Having someone you trust nearby can help you feel more relaxed and supported.

  • Stay Hydrated and Rested

A good night’s sleep and drinking water will help you look and feel your best.

With a little preparation and the right mindset, you’ll end up with photos that you’ll love 10 years from now. If you’re in Des Moines, Iowa, or nearby, I would love to work with you to make your vision come to life.
